The Shocking and Stunning
2010 -
The Shocking and Stunning are Jack Hooker (synths/sampler/effects) and Sam Lovrich-FitzPatrick (drums). Described by Martyn Pepperell in VanguardRed Magazine as “emotive, physically propulsive and above all, f***ing epic”, they combine densely layered synths and heavy live drums to make wall-of-sound music that sits between dance, trance, noise and drone.
The Shocking and Stunning were most in the early 2010's. In that time they released six EPs, a music video, scored a documentary, collaborated with rappers Tourettes and Name UL, toured numerous times throughout New Zealand and Australia, performed at festivals such as Camp A Low Hum and Rhythm and Alps, and played many house parties.
Since 2014 the band have made sporadic appearances, playing at festivals such as Twisted Frequency, Chronophonium, The Performance Arcade and A Gathering in the Forest. In 2019 they made a surprise one-off return, releasing their long-overdue debut full-length album. The self-titled album contains new works, as well as older pieces that have been reworked and rerecorded with James Goldsmith at Bluebarn Studios.
“Two members, a synth, a sampler and a drum kit make noises so earth moving and hypnotic they leave you in a trance long after the music has stopped.”
- The Corner
"To hear The Shocking and Stunning play live is to witness the awesome energy they can generate with the most basic setups. Their intoxicating, trance-inducing formula combines Jack's wall of synths with Sam's frantic drumming, ingredients enhanced by their liberal use of musical effects.’
- Sam Wicks, The Red Bulletin.
"In a dystopian future, when cosmopolitan cities are reduced to scorching ruins and deserted landscapes, The Shocking and Stunning's discography will be the soundtrack of the last battle cry of outnumbered benign rebels fighting against mutants, zombies, cyborgs and aliens."
- James Manning, Gather and Hunt Magazine
